Winckley Square conservation

Summary of special interest:

• Winckley Square was the first planned residential expansion of Preston at the beginning of the 19th century.
• A mixture of nineteenth and twentieth century commercial and retail buildings on a historic thoroughfare in the north, with their origins in the medieval street layout and burgage plots.
• Fine Georgian town houses, mostly dating from the early nineteenth century and stepped back from the pavement to allow light to cellars, with some smaller middle class terraced houses, around Winckley Square in the southern part.
• A number of buildings or monuments listed or of local architectural or historic interest.
• Traditional craftsmanship embodied in original building materials and architectural features.
• Visual harmony resulting from use of a limited palette of natural building materials of brick and slate roofs and a limited variety of styles, particularly around Winckley Square.
• Hard and soft landscaped spaces and historic street surfaces in parts of the conservation area enhancing the environment.
• Green open space provided by Winckley Square gardens with its informal landscaping in an enclosed space.

Conservation area appraisal

Section 69 (2) of the Act imposes a duty on local authorities to review their conservation areas from time to time and Section 71 requires local authorities to formulate and publish proposals for the preservation and enhancement of conservation areas.

Winckley Square Conservation Area appraisal (PDF) [1MB]  was designated in 1975 by Preston Borough Council, was amended in 1984 and extended in 1987 and 2009. The previous character appraisal was carried out in 2009 and updated in June 2018.
