Could you apply for Pension Credit?
12 September 2024
Over 1.4 million pensioners in Britain already receive Pension Credit but there are still many people who have not claimed.
Preston City Council is encouraging anyone who may be eligible make a claim.
Pension Credit helps people of State Pension age on low income with their living costs. However, you do not have to be in receipt of State Pension to be eligible for Pension Credit.
If the applicant is single, Pension Credit tops up a pensioner's weekly income to £218.15, or a joint weekly income to £332.95 if claiming as a couple. However, these amounts can be higher for people with disabilities or caring responsibilities.
The average Pension Credit award is £3,500 per year. It does not affect any other benefits and could mean that recipients could also be eligible for:
- Help with housing costs and Council Tax
- Help with NHS costs including free dental treatment
- Free sight tests and vouchers towards glasses
- Cold weather payments towards your heating bill
- Warm Homes Discount - money off your electricity bill
- Extra Cost of Living payments
- Winter Fuel Payment
- Royal Mail redirection service discount
- Free TV licence if over 75
Councillor Coupland, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing said:
"lt is very important for pensioners to apply for Pension Credit. If eligible, it will give them extra money to help with living costs in these very difficult times."
