Face masks to be delivered with food parcels
17 December 2020
Face masks sewn by local community volunteers are to be delivered with food parcels to those in financial hardship in Preston, helping to keep people safe during the pandemic.
Patrick Grant - of BBC's Great British Sewing Bee fame and the Big Community Sew project - arranged for Cookson & Clegg in Blackburn to source and cut the fabric for the masks, enough to make 2,000. They also sourced sponsorship for the project from Preston born entrepreneur, Luke Smith and his digital marketing agency, Croud.
Patrick was glad to have the opportunity to help with such a worthwhile local project.
"These local volunteers were happy to put their sewing skills to use and in doing so they have helped to support some of the most vulnerable people in their community. I applaud and thank them for their efforts and appreciate the work Preston City Council are doing to distribute these face masks to those most in need."
We have to thank Jenny from Cookson & Clegg and Jane, a resident from Preston who has worked with the Council's Community Engagement team in developing the project. Jane helped enormously in co-ordinating everything - from getting the templates and fabric to the number of people in the community doing the sewing of the face masks, to speaking to everyone involved and keeping things on track. We also thank staff from Preston's College who have supported Jane in making a large number of masks.
Councillor Nweeda Khan, Cabinet member for communities and social justice, added:
"This is an example of great partnership working between businesses and communities to help those in financial hardship in Preston access essential face coverings.
"I knew we had fantastic communities across the city, and this year has brought out the best in them. People from all sectors of our communities have stepped up and volunteered their time to help and it makes me really proud to represent the city. I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved."
