Leave a Christmas ribbon at Preston Cemetery baby area

Two Christmas trees have been delivered and planted in the baby memorial area at Preston Cemetery. Families who have sadly lost babies and young children are invited to leave a ribbon on one of the trees as a way of including their loved ones in Christmas celebrations.

The idea came from a member of the Friends of Preston Cemetery group, and will be in place until the end of January 2021. The trees will then be removed and re-planted next December, ready to bring back year after year.

Councillor Peter Moss, Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for planning and regulation, said,

"We thought this was a wonderful idea from the Friends Group and I'm grateful to everyone involved for making it happen so quickly. Knowing there'll be a Christmas tree every year decorated with ribbons will hopefully be a small comfort to the families at this time of year."

Member of Friends of Preston Cemetery Group, Margaret Heaps, said

"I thought it would be a lovely idea for families with a sleeping baby to be able to visit and leave ribbons on a tree at the Cemetery. Christmas can be really tough but hopefully this gesture comforts the families and the treasured memories of their little ones."
