Giant Pumpkin at Preston Markets

Giant Pumpkin at Preston Markets

28 October 2020

The giant pumpkin, which has been on display at Preston Markets for the month of October is being donated to The Larder.

The pumpkin, prepared by The Larder's chef, will be cooked and portioned into meals then distributed within the community.

Councillor Nweeda Khan, Cabinet Member for Communities and Social Justice at Preston City Council said:

"It is great that the pumpkin is not going to waste and will be put to good use as delicious pumpkin soup for the Preston Plate initiative.

Going into winter it is important that the most vulnerable residents of Preston have access to nutritional food and housing, which Preston City Council, Community Gateway and The Larder aim to provide."

Kay Johnson MBE, Owner of The Larder said:

"Thanks to Preston Markets for the donation of the giant pumpkin to such a good cause. It will be used to create a delicious pumpkin soup which will be distributed as part of the Preston Plate initiative, which will provide over 250 families with fresh ingredients for a Lancashire Hotpot cook along taking place on the 12th November.

At The Larder we promote food that's healthy, local, seasonal and waste-free. We aim to create a fairer food system locally by providing people with the skills and resources needed to enjoy a healthy diet."

There is still chance to win a Preston Markets hamper, by guessing the weight of the giant pumpkin. Enter on the Preston Markets social media channels or email your guess to communications@preston.gov.uk. The pumpkin will remain on display at Preston Markets until Monday 2 November.
