Leader of Preston City Council, Councillor Matthew Brown said,

"We are committed to working alongside neighbouring authorities to achieve the best possible outcome for our residents, communities and businesses.

It is clear to see that change is necessary and that the current structure for local government in Lancashire is not fit for purpose for our shared ambitions for both the county and the Central Lancashire area. According to the criteria set by Government, we believe that a Central Lancashire unitary formed by the current district authorities of Preston, Chorley, South Ribble and West Lancashire is the best solution, matched by newly formed unitary authorities covering the Coastal and Pennine areas of the County.

The pandemic has had a significant impact on our community and it is essential we work together to support our area in a robust and equitable recovery programme, which we believe requires the implementation of real change and devolution through a combined authority working alongside a strong and flexible structure of local government.

This has the opportunity to enable the energy, focus and compassion of local government, business and communities to deliver social justice, an inclusive economy and a sustainable future for every single one of our residents."
