The Harris and Preston Markets to light up purple to support the fight against racism.
01 June 2020
The Harris and Preston Markets will be lit purple from late Monday 1 June until Wednesday 3 June in solidarity with those protesting racism and injustice worldwide.
Preston City Council has taken the decision to join cities across the UK and around the world in lighting key buildings purple as an act of solidarity with George Floyd, the American man who lost his life after being restrained by police in the USA.
Councillor Matthew Brown, Leader of Preston City Council said:
Lighting our buildings purple signifies that Preston and its people stand against racism and are in solidarity with all the people and communities across the world who are struggling against any form of prejudice and violent oppression.
At a later date we will also lower the flag over the Town Hall and hold a minutes silence to commemorate George's passing. The Cabinet and I continue to be proud to live in a multicultural city and proud to stand up to bigotry and hatred in whatever form it takes.
