Referendums

Hand posting a polling card into a vote box

In this section you can find out about referendums that have being held within the Preston City Council boundary and results of previous referendums.

Change the way the council is governed

The government wants to offer local communities the opportunity to make a choice about the way in which they are governed.

The local authority must operate either:

  • A mayor and cabinet executive
  • A leader and cabinet executive
  • A committee system

We currently operate under a leader and cabinet model.

If the local community decide they would prefer to have a different form of governance they can petition the Council.

If more than 5% of the city's registered electorate petition us, a referendum would be held  Publication of Verification Number 2024 (PDF) [172KB] .

The number that will be used for the purposes of determining the validity of petitions is 5296.
