Play areas
Children's playgrounds provide children and young people with an area to relax, explore, meet friends and play.
Play is an essential part of every child's life and important for their development. Through play, children learn about themselves and the world around them.
Smiths Recreation Ground Improvements
Play Area Update - 31 July 2023
Preston City Council has secured funding from The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities to do some refurbishment on Smiths Recreation Ground (Selborne Street, George Street) in 2023.
The preparatory works have been done, however unfortunately we are facing a delay as we need to await a dry spell of weather and the availability of the specialist surfacing contractor to lay safer surfacing. The original contractor will then complete the installation of the equipment.
Please be aware that the play area will remain closed until the new equipment and surfacing is installed.
Management and maintenance
We manage over 50 play areas, catering for age groups ranging from 3 years to 14 years with teenage equipment on several sites.
We provide a weekly inspection and repair service for the council's play areas and we also carry out development work to improve the quality of our play areas.
