Housing Benefit and Advice

Help and information is available on our Housing benefits or benefits and debt advice pages.

Housing Standards

We appreciate the valued contribution that many landlords make in the community. A minority of landlords fail to manage their properties to an acceptable standard. We are therefore making full use of new powers under the Housing Act 2004 which enables the licensing of certain landlords in order to improve conditions for tenants and the local community.

Direction referring to Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOS)

A direction came into force on 28 January 2013 which enables us to control the number of properties which become Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) by requiring the submission of a planning application. For more information see our page.

Right to rent checks

From 1 February 2016 landlords must check whether prospective tenants and occupants have the right to rent in the UK.

Guidance for landlords and tenants can be found in the GOV.UK - Right to rent user guide.
