Bulky household waste collection

Who can use our service?

We offer a collection service for bulky (large) household waste items that do not fit inside a grey wheeled bin.

The service is only available to Preston households.

What can be collected?

We collect most household items such as:

• Beds
• Mattresses
• Settees
• Fridge freezers
• Carpets

Please note: large or heavy items may need dismantling prior to collection.

Carpet collections

We can collect rolls of carpet. Our collections are carried out by a crew of two. Large amounts of carpet which are too heavy to be moved safely by two people will not be collected.

What can't be collected?

We will not collect items such as:

• asbestos
• gas cylinders
• clinical waste
• windows (broken glass panels)
• rubble

Please note: you may be able to take some of these items to your local recycling centre (tip), though please check what they accept before making a journey.

How much is the collection?

The table below explains how much your collection will cost:

* A charge of £8.00 per item will be added to collections over 3 items. A maximum of 6 items can be collected

Exceptions which count as more than one item

Certain items count as more than one item for collection. For example, a corner settee counts as three items, a small kitchen table and four chairs counts as three.

When will my items be collected?

Items will be collected on your arranged day between 7am and 3:30pm Monday - Friday. We do not collect over the weekend.

Where should I place my items for collection?

Items for collection must be left in an accessible place such as:

• on the ground floor (our crews will not go upstairs for items)
• back alley - At the nearest point to the main road
• near the bin area (if you live in a flat)
• At the end of the driveway

Please place your items outside either the night before or morning of the collection. Put all items together in one place. We will only pick up the items you have requested.

Give away or donate unwanted items 

If your items are in reasonable condition, you may want to consider donating or giving them away to other people who are in need of them.

Freegle is an online service which allows you to get and give unwanted items for free from residents within your local community.

Donate unwanted items to charity

You can donate your unwanted items to the following local charities who will collect free of charge:

Emmaus

Emmaus is a homelessness charity. They provide a home for as long as someone needs it, as well as meaningful work in their social enterprise. This helps improve self-esteem and gives residents the opportunity to regain control of their lives.

Gift 92

Gift 92 is a charity based in Preston supporting over 500 local families and around 800 individuals in real need each year. Established in Guild year 1992, Gift 92 was set up to collect unwanted items of furniture and household items for distribution to people in need across Preston.

British Heart Foundation

The British Heart Foundation is the UK's number one heart charity and through 50 years of funding cutting edge research, they have made a bid difference to people's lives. They help millions of people every year with their up to date information about heart disease.

St Catherine's Hospice

St Catherine's Hospice cares for people across Chorley, Longridge, Preston and South Ribble who are affected by life-limiting conditions. Whilst many of their patients have cancer, they also support people with other conditions such as heart failure, motor neurone disease and Parkinson's disease.

Shelter

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through their advice, support and legal services. They campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to them for help. Shelter is here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.
