Appeal a food hygiene rating

As a food business owner, you have the right to appeal a food hygiene rating if you feel it does not reflect the food hygiene standards and food safety management controls found at the time of the inspection.

Before making an appeal

Before making an appeal, you should contact the food safety officer to understand why the rating was given.

How long do I have to appeal?

You have 21 days (including weekends and bank holidays) from the date of receiving your rating to make an appeal.

Please note: any discussions you have do not change the deadline within which the appeal must be made.

How to appeal

After speaking to the food safety officer, if you still feel the rating is unfair or wrong, you can make an appeal by completing the following online form:

What happens next?

Once you have submitted your form, we will review your rating and contact you to let you know the outcome of your appeal within 21 days.
