Nature reserves in Preston

We manage five local nature reserves across the city.

Fishwick Local Nature Reserve and Recreation Ground

Fishwick Local Nature Reserve and Recreation Ground is made of woodland, grassland and wetland habitat.

Each habitat features a range of wildlife including kingfisher and heron with lots of plant species such as bluebells, wild garlic, Campion and celandines.

The site is supported by several partners and has retained its Green Flag award since 2007.

The area also includes a BMX track, which is home to Preston Pirates BMX club. The track is open to the public when the club are not using it.

Grange Valley Nature Reserve

Grange Valley Nature Reserve is located next to Grange Park and has a large open green space habitat.

The habitat features a range of wildlife such as chaffinches, dunnocks, wrens, whitethroats, sparrowhawks and kestrels. There are also a variety of butterfly, which are attracted to the reserves wild meadow flowers..

The area also includes health trails from gentle to more challenging walks.

Hills and Hollows Nature Reserve

Hills and Hollow Nature Reserve is a large site made up of different habitats along an open tributary valley of Savick Brook.

The habitats feature a range of wildlife including a wide variety of butterfly (eg. Small Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral, Larger Skipper etc..) and birds (eg. Sparrow Hawks, Kestrel, Wren etc..). There is also a wide variety of vegetation in the different habitat areas from Willow and Alder in the woodlands to Ragged Robin and Pignut along the brook.

Pope Lane Field Nature Reserve

Pope Lane Field Nature Reserve was once a recreational field and has since been left to grow into a marshy grassland habitat.

The habitat attracts birds of prey (eg. Buzzards) and summer shelter for roe deer. The damp marshy land also features great crested newts and orchids can also be found growing in the grasses.

The reserve also takes in a section of the Guild Wheel cycle route providing leisurely walk and cycling options.

Boilton Wood Nature Reserve

Boilton Wood Nature Reserve is part of Lancashire's largest and longest stretch of ancient woodland habitat and is designated as a site of special scientific interest.

The habitat attracts a carpet of bluebells, as the species grows best in older woodland environments. Therefore it is best visiting in spring during the bluebell season.
